What's your experience with banner exchanges?

I am thinking of adding a banner exchange to the services I provide.

But before I do, it is time to gather some intell, so hear goes:

What's your experience with banner exchanges? Have you used them? What were the results? How do you feel the use of an exchange influences the perception of the website showing the banners? And how do you think it makes the advertiser look?

Have you ever bought extra credits on such an exchange? If so, how much did you pay and how much did you get for it? Was it worth it to you?

Have you used a banner exchange when you started, to kickstart your site, after which you stopped using it, or do you continue to use it?

What more can you tell me?

As an advertiser, I never gave that route a second look, because it would mean having a butt-load of ads on my sales pages.

You need to exchange ads with a lot of webmasters in order to see even halfway decent traffic, and that means there will be a hell of a lot of ads in your site. Whether it is a sales page, blog, magazine, whatever, people do not want to see a mess of ads on a page.

In addition to that, you would be hard-pressed to find decent sites that its webmasters would want to do that.

But, hell, give it a shot anyway.

What is your website that you are "getting lots of traffic" in?

    Very 1998. Very targeted.

Not really an effective way of doing anything useful.

With a banner exchange, you need only have one position on your site, where the ads of others rotate.
On one site, I use OpenX, and in OpenX, I have a campaign named "Exchanges", with an html-banner for each exchange. This enables me to put more different ads on one position (of course, this also divides my impressions over the different programmes.

Knowing that, would you be interested?

To be honest,I don't think banner exchange is a useful and effective way for your promotion. There can be still
many other ways for you to choose. For me,links building works much better that banner ads.

Hmm... good replies. Perhaps I should put my focus elsewhere for a while.

    Thanks
