Create a great product, people will come. That's my motto Really, if you have an excellent product, word of mouth will do more for you than anything else

I agree to a certain extent...but how do you take your product to your target market?...as if you just rely on WOM, it may take ages, and who has patience these days?
So, do you charge for consultig based on an hourly basis? or a fixed fee? or on performance only or a % based fee on the profit your client makes? Do you also upsell, cross sell...etc?
Well, you'll have to jump start it somehow with advertising/adwords/contests/etc.. But once you have that word of mouth, SEO is pretty easy as well because you'rell receive tons of links.
In a competitive market, provide the best service and keep promoting, it never ends. Create a cycle of experimentation and then doing more of what works. And keep on doing forever... OR Just think how can you help people and create a unique product and its own market.
