I was doing a research on "Breast Cancer" and the site that rank number one for this word is http://www.thebreastcancersite.com which is a fashion store

The word "Breast Cancer" has been searched 169833 times in December 2006 in Yahoo and maybe 7-10x of that in Google

how come irrelevant site is ranked number 1 for this important and famous keyword ?

Edit: just figured out they give the revenue to "National Breast Cancer Foundation" but is that an excuse ?

What is irrelevant about it? It is a Breast Cancer awareness site.

    FYI it is #4 here.

Same reason why 'click here' leads to Adobe Reader...even though those words don't appear on that site and all. And it doesn't work anymore but before if you typed failure on Google you got Bush's biography.

The wonder of links and anchor text.

I've noticed similar stuff, am amazed how much commercial crap comes up for searches about serious medical conditions. It just so happens that I created a Health-Only search engine using Google's Co-op's CSE =) I think the results are pretty good:

Breast cancer results on my CSE
    www.healthfind.com - feedback is appreciated.

What do you mean "whats wrong with google" That site is HIGHLY relevant to your search.

    A site about breast cancer
breast cancer mentioned in content (only a couple of times)
    PR7 <<<==== no slouch there.
140,000 Yahoo backlinks (more than a few with breast cancer in anchor text)
    11 listings in DMOZ
    2000 to 3000 .edu links
    20 to 40 .gov links
    6+ year old domain

    Google certainly ain't broken

The site is a for-profit merchandising company. They give some portion of their profits to fund mammograms, but they don't really say how much.

A cynic might say they're using the charity angle to build their business. They probably view it as building a successful business that has the added bonus of helping a worthy cause.

Would they have 1/10th of the links/traffic if they had no association with breast cancer charity? Probably not, but it's a win/win I guess. I won't be adding them to my custom-search-engine, though.
