My whole region is that way.. the whole county basically (where broadband is actually available)... and that's nothing compared to one county to the north where it's easily twice as worse... two counties north, broadband? What's that? Folks in the Dakotas, western Maine, much of the midwest that's not on a direct feed from Chicago sees basically the same thing.

It's why you can't assume everyone has that magical high speed connect for noodle-doodle sizes... even when it's "high speed" (and yes, I can easily push this to downloading the full 22mbps) doesn't mean it handshakes well.

Did I mention that this is 22 down and 1mbps up? (the fastest upstream available for 50 miles) -- actually, that might explain the difference in down to up response times, wouldn't it? Might at least be related.

Definitely nutty whatever is going on over there.

Even pinging a server that is physically in Moscow, Russia... yields ~200ms latency (about as far from the west coast of the US as possible)

    PING 79.174.68.111 (79.174.68.111) 56(84) bytes of data.
    64 bytes from 79.174.68.111: icmp_req=1 ttl=49 time=203 ms
    64 bytes from 79.174.68.111: icmp_req=2 ttl=49 time=203 ms
    64 bytes from 79.174.68.111: icmp_req=3 ttl=49 time=203 ms
    64 bytes from 79.174.68.111: icmp_req=4 ttl=49 time=203 ms
    64 bytes from 79.174.68.111: icmp_req=5 ttl=49 time=204 ms
    Code (markup):
Over the years I've used the site from various places (Costa Rica, Germany, Puerto Rico, Canada, Hawaii, Russia, from airplanes with craptastic connectivity, etc.) and I've never run into anything that made the site feel slow.

I've noticed the same thing on other forums; I'm a mod on a couple and I came over to check out DP and see if things are the same over here. The influx of folks who "post to post" and who are not here to really connect or learn or share, but simply to try and get links, do fill the fora with garbage. But another factor seems to have an impact; there are other more interesting ways to connect with people and those of us who really love forums for the sake of community are finding other places as or more attractive.

Yep... and that is the biggest underlying problem (which I'll be the first to admit). While we do have things in place to curb it, it's most definitely not enough... And I've been working on some things that hopefully will be ready to enable this month that I think will exponentially cut down on the retarded people posting gibberish.

That would be awesome ... I hope you will share your technique with Admins at other forums.

Well, the idea is the easy part... it's a lot of code to put it into play. But we'll see... I'm hopeful at least.

Sounds interesting. I'd be interested in brainstorming ideas for how to do that ... for example, what if you are asked a question before you post a new thread (when your post count is less than 10, say) that says something like:

Are you really seeking an answer to this question or are you new here and anxious to get your post count up? If this isn't genuine, please consider lurking a while longer ...

I know it might be naive of me to think that could have an impact, but if the page also carried a warning of sorts that says moderators will delete such threads and mark the user's profile ...

Anyway ... just thinking out loud.

Its because DP banned so many great users. The best people got tired of starting all over again without the iTraders earned.

Bans are given for a reason and expire. There is no need to "start all over again" and doing so will earn an additional ban.

This just made me laugh since I didn't think anyone legitimately here was using that traders nonsense... but that whole section of the forums sets my natural sleaze alarm to full alert.

Well, too some extinct it is true... now a days it is really getting frustrating to do something on DP.

    * Do moderator even care about the itrader before banning?
    * Do you guys even check if the infraction given to someone is legitimate or not. Deleting the entire thread saying Duplicate thread and gives an infraction and not even bother to replying to the PM? you can do better than this?
    * Do you guys even know that some of your mod's are responsible for doing unnecessary action so that DP users move from this Forum to their forum?

Make the rules so hard and bias, that even the legitimate users get impacted, so that no one comes back. That's the main problem... I used to spend here about 3-4 hours a day atleast.

Spreading more nonsensical garbage no doubt. How are the rules biased?

Not at all. If someone breaks our rules, their iTrader has no bearing on if they receive in infraction. If anything, I'd be more inclined to give an infraction to someone with a lot of iTrader than a user without since they have been here long enough to learn the rules.

Yes of course we look at things related to an infraction given. Certainly aren't given randomly/blindly.

    If a user leaves our site because they get infractions for breaking our rules, well... good I guess. It just means less rule breakers. {shrug}

The rules aren't hard to understand or follow really. If people are unable (or more likely unwilling) to follow or rules, well... not really an issue if they move on to another site. There are users with thousands of posts who have never gotten an infraction (and not because they are immune to them or anything)... they simply follow the rules (which are pretty simple).

No, the rules are fine. It's the huge amount of spam that matters.

When moderators get paid, I will complain about how they enforce the rules. ;)

Seriously, the rules on any forum are pretty simple: don't spam and don't flame.

I thought I was the only non-moronic person on this entire forum until I found this thread. What a relief it is to know there are people with at least half a brain on digitalpoint.

What I see a lot of is:

    1) Threads are started by dumbasses.

    2) Then the spammers/scammers jump on board with replies (basically to promote their sig. links or outright spam)

The other worrying trend I see is 'pretend' dumb/ignorant questions being asked by posters, so their spammer friends can promote their business/product.

    Eg, this thread:
Which is the best company for SEO service?

I can see the spammers licking their lips. An absolute spammers paradise. I encourage anyone to read through that thread just for the lols.

Another worry are the impatient new members (14 day/25 post rule) blatantly selling their items on wrong forums (domain names, appraisals) and mods doing nothing about it. I see at least 1 thread of this per 24 hours.

Thanks mods for deleting that spamtacular thread. That thread dragged on for long enough.

Please delete these as well, before the spammers jump on board:

Making a post about threads you want to report isn't going to do a whole lot. If you want to report posts and have someone look into them, just use the "Report Post" option.
