what's with the www prefix

    some domain names open only when www prefix is inserted before them while some open when www is not inserted before them. on the other hands many other domains open whether www is inserted or not. what's behind this fact?

    i want to use the google app email domain service so i'd tried changing the CNAME for my domain, but i think i did something wrong, when i type my url with the www, google error 404 msg shows up, here's a screenshot of my DNS setting area.. kindly help
    http : // www (dot) plusbrain (dot) com /clients/upload/dp_cname.png

    i think the cname shud be change for the "mail" and not for the "www" is that it?? and wat do we term the "www" and "mail" here???
