    About 30-40% of them seem like their host is really slow.. it takes 2 minutes for the page to load after you submit

    My guess is that free directory = very low revenue, so they are probably keeping hosting costs down.

    Did you consider it may be a problem on your end? I guess if just the free directory you are looking at is loading slow and other pages are fast, it is the directory's hosting. But, if other web pages are slow too, it may be a problem on your end. I know for me, depending on the time of day, my internet speed (at my end) can vary - I would just check before you assume it is the website.

    some free directories possibly get very full, data base performance on a low spec hosting package might degrade,

    you get what you pay for

    free = get little :)

    It really depends on the directory structure and if the server has the mod_gzip or mod_deflate enabled. Usually, sites having one of those mods enabled load a little slow because the information has to be decompressed by the browser too. This is the case of my web directory but, anyway, times are not too long, considering the main page is approx 1k...

    I too think hosting is a major factor. Most people start with a shared solution and that includes me. Soon to be moving to a dedicated server :) I never wait too long for a page to load it seems like my life is slipping away lol

    All good reasons.. but im pretty sure it isnt on my end.. everyday i go through the new directories and some will load in 20 secs others stall for about 2 minutes. Hosting can really make a difference, i got mine for only 12.99 a year but recently upgraded the package to $24.

    My first assumption is cheap hosting plans with high traffic? Not sure. I always host with the best to reduce this. Since I charge for listing in my directories, it is crucial that everything load flawlessly.

    If the directories have a lot of categories that have to be loaded on the submit page, they can cause it to be slow.
