eSyndiCat has never been encrypted at all. Are you sure you are talking about our software?

In our 2.3 version you really need to change just 2 files and one css file. Still the same template system that is widely used by many scripts - Smarty.

Thanks for your support guys :)

What about positioning various blocks, you cannot do that just with header and footer files i am assuming nor with css ?

What about creating a new plugin or addon ? Does the script allow for modifications ?

eSyndiCat allows u to create plugins and position blocks with ease, you can actually choose where u want the plugin to go! ....

and making plugins, you dont have to touch any core files,... (atleast i didnt have to) just make your plugin and upload.... all done!

    Go here
    user:admin pass:admin
Then go to visual Manage, you can move blocks with your mouse.

Yes, you are right :) You cannot do that just with header/footer/css. You can do that using admin panel -> Visual Mode or Manage blocks functionality. Sure, you have completely NEW non standard position or location for your block you will need to modify the files. Also you can even set which page a block should be displayed on.

No problem with that. You can create new plugins, etc. We already had customers who created 3rd party plugins like Site of the Day and Articles plugin.

That's not true. If you aren't gonna use the template. Just the database and the new script is enough for an upgrade. :)

But if you plan a complete upgrade, coding, modifications, template every code needs a modification.

awinsjclarke, "established" has nothing to do with the script used. So I don't the point here.
For a demo, you can see their official demo.

Of course when you are talking about a directory as large as dmoz you need to optimize the script as well as the servers. I tried esyndicat with 130,000 listings and it is running fast http://www.webenquirer.com
I also tried it with 3 million listings but modified the script (essentially to make categories as subdomains) and it is very fast http://local.enquira.com/

Yes, that's right. Anyway, as a developer myself and manager of several software projects I can say it's really hard to find a compromise for script flexibility (with all the possible features that would fit thousands of websites) and its scalability. If you need a site like DMOZ then you should definitely hire a group of developers to make that script for you. It depends on your needs...
