Hi, IMHO, a site map is not only Search Engine friendly but also site visitor friendly.

It helps search engine to index your site. By placing a site map link there, all the pages on website will be indexed much faster.

And for visitors, it will save their time to find what they want in your site.

Google Sitemaps need not be in XML format. Although this is best if you can create an XML formatted sitemap as it offers many more features.
If you cannot create an XML sitemap, you can create a simple text file with one URL link on each line.
