I'm a noob when it comes to SEO, but I noticed that people were talking about 100k webpages with CMS software. I assume that you submit the sitemap and thats how all those pages get indexed. Do most of you guys do it for the money or do you really need all those pages? Also, do you think that you would get more traffic combined from Google by doing this as opposed to having a website with a few pages with really good content?

The number of required pages depends on the project and the type of traffic your trying to generate.

You can rank very well with small sites with a low number of pages with very good well optimized content.

I speak from experience when I insist on quality over quantity. 1 site with 100 quality pages can easily out-do 100k pages of inferior quality in terms of revenue and readership.

I have a membership based site which has about 500,000 message forum postings with about 2500 blog posts along with about 500 content articles. The total # of pages is about 1,000,000 (Google crawled my permalinks on the post replies), but I get 90% of traffic to my top 100 static content pages, the rest of the pages generally sit idle for a large part.

On the other hand, some of my other sites with only about 60 pages have the same traffic #s as the site above. I believe it's quality over quantity, 100% of the time. :)

100k is EASILY to achieve. just use associate-o-matic (for amazon)..and make a store selling some amazon stuff. 100k+ pages.

Thanks for the input. I'm kind of at a crossroads. I have a new site and want to get lots of traffic. I learned very quickly how to monetize sites fairly well, but am unsure of which road to choose as far as quality vs quantity. Part of me wants to go the way which makes the most money and the other part of me wants it be the best possible website that will provide an enriching experience for my visitors. By your responses, it looks like providing quality content outperforms massive volume for the most part. So it would be in my best interest to increase the quality of my site as oppose to being worried about having enough pages.

Cool...never imagine such number of pages...I wonder how will you manage such an amount of pages? Lots of work to do as always.

Here's something else to consider. Many of those 100K page websites use a software program that automatically generates content pages. Some are good and some are bad. Some even create good, valuable content that is useful to your readers (depending on the source of that content.)

However, Google (and others) algorithims are sometimes able to detect auto-created web pages and will ban and exclude your site from being indexed. So take care here. You cannot go wrong by placing quality over quantity.

Also, dont forget the Apache Mod-Rewrite... It makes a site "appear" to have thousands of pages. I have a site with 200k pages (est) and it takes like foooooorrrreeeevvvvvveeeeeerrrrrrr to get them all crawled and listed!

it's a way of getting traffic. working with large web sites is so difficult to do. it will need more backlinks and time for getting good traffic

What is the ideal number of pages to have on the website? Say the site is not optimised for search engines..but the content is meant only for informative purpose.

Obviously the more pages you have the better your chances of getting traffic, but like most people on this thread have pointed out quality over quantity.

100k? my only reasonable guess is that this is a warehouse website of some sort (an online store, perhaps). Other than that, though, it seems to be a bit pointless. The quality/quantity thing also applies, definitely.
