What's the one thing you did that had the biggest effect on conversions?

    Hey guys,

Last week I asked what's the one biggest mistake you made in online marketing and the response for that was pretty good. I think it would be a good idea if I ask a similar question every week so we can all learn from it :)

So this week's question, what's the one thing you did that had the biggest effect on conversion's? Maybe you moved something around which got you more sales, maybe you removed the Google Adsense border which gave you more clicks, or maybe you included your website name in the page title which gave you more clicks on search engines. Anything!

Let me start: A few years ago I had re-styled my Google Adsense: removed the border and set the colours to look exactly like the menu. Put the Adsense under the menu and my conversions tripled overnight!

    Your turn!

When I first started marketing online in the mid 90's (yikes!...old fart alert) I wasted a ton of time writing copy that I thought would "sell my products" by highlighting the product details. In other words, I was trying to sell by saying product X is better than the rest because of...fill in the blank.

The truth is, most buyers aren't interested in the product details, they make purchases based on what personal benefits the product will bring to them.

So, learning to "sell the benefits" rather than the product details was one of the biggest marketing lessons I learned through experience.

I agree with Scott. I would not place so much on ad copy and also people don't want to read more than two short paragraphs. What people want is a short paragraph or so and the benefits of what the product will do for you in exact terms. I think testing is a big thing to see what will convert the best and also get very targeted traffic to your pages instead of just buying general ppc terms for products.

You need an Unique Sales Proposition - a strong reason why should they buy from you - and a Call To Action - something like Click here, Sign up, etc.

Also when it comes to marketing copy, less is more.

I agree with Scott, and with ShoeMoney for that matter (see Selling Results by Jeremy Shoemaker). Well written sales copy is the most important factor. And selling a product is much easier when talking about the benefits/results than when talking about features!

First of all your copy needs to be without any grammatical mistakes,I usually write the copy myself and hire an english writer to rewrite it for me.I am thinking about hiring a copywriter in the future...

If you have money the best thing to do is to hire a good copywriter, think about it as an investment because you will benefit from that investment on the long run,if you every month send 5,000 people to an offer and you get a 1% conversion rate and earn a 20$ commission for every sale that ends up in 1000$ for that month, but what if you hire a copywriter and he gets you a 3% conversion rate?

Your earnings wont be 1000$ monthly then, they will go up to 3000$,just think about how much money you are leaving on the table.

I'll do the math for you:)

1% conversion rate ends up in 12,000$ yearly, from the example above.

3% conversion rate ends up in 36,000$ yearly.

You can get a good copywriter anywhere from 1000$-5000$,so with the first two months profits you will pay the copywriter and then it is just bigger profit for you, keep in mind that the copy is yours forever. You will be making more money from it each and every month.

If you want to write it yourself keep this few things in mind.....

As ScottBannon said, benefits sell not product details and that is true....this is really important, actually the most important part.

Imagine that you are selling weight loss products,e-books whatever related to weight loss.First you need to know what exactly your customers want, they have a problem and you just need to offer them a solution, and in this situation it is a effective method for losing weight, probably they also want to lose weight very fast....

Don't list details, they should be listed but they are not the part which should catch their eyes...

    List benefits...

You'll start losing weight after the first day off implementing this unbelievable diet plan.

You'll lose that extra fat really fast compared to other methods.

You'll get that flat stomach that you are dreaming of.

You will not be hungry in any time during this diet.

Your fat friends will be jealous.

You will be healthier than ever before.

    Got it...

So you now have some sort of a problem, you want to improve your conversions.

Please chose a link?Look at both first:)

    Conversion articles,title articles,text body articles...

How to triple your conversions overnight with these easy to follow methods

Which one did you chosen?Probably both but which one first?

Remember that your title should be catchy if you want your readers to continue reading and if they continue reading you have a better chance for generating a sale.

8 titles that generated billions of dollars

I probably don't need to entice you to click on that link above,if you didn't,click it and read that post....words are the most powerful toll that you have online.

Also positioning your product compared to the others is a must...

    Why they need your product?

Why it is better than thousands others?

    How can it help them?

That is about affiliate marketing and selling your products....

    Adsense?

Just test, test and test till you are satisfied, various ad unit sizes...

A good practice is also making the ad units eye catching by changing colors....

But for that you need to read one afternoon about colors and which colors are in contrast....Learn how to use colors properly.

OMG,a really long post, need to go now.....

    Michael.

I give free tips, samples from my e-books.

I also put the ordering form on the same page the sales pitch is on. When they are done reading, I then ask them to fill it out.

Why so many webmasters put their ordering form on a separate page amazes me.

    The Great Awakening

The Great Awakening was a watershed event in the life of the American people. Before it was over, it had swept the colonies of the Eastern seaboard, transforming the social and religious life of land. Although the name is slightly misleading--the Great Awakening was not one continuous revival, rather it was several revivals in a variety of locations--it says a great deal about the state of religion in the colonies. For the simple reality is that one cannot be awakened unless you have fallen asleep.
