    Hi guys,

    I'm interested in knowing what everyone's one biggest mistake was in their online marketing experience. Whether it was wasting time buying domains, advertising the wrong PPC words, whatever!

    Hopefully this post can teach us all a thing or two :)

    Marc

    wasting money on broad keywords in Adsense.
    Meaning, instead of targeting specific products I targeted "PC Games", "Video Games", etc...

    Big waste of money except for Branding reasons.

    First biggest mistake was not signing up to this forum earlier.

    Second and most important mistake is taking to much advice from this forum. Not saying the advice is great and very informative but there are other ways to promote your site other than article directories, web directories, blog comments etc. A good webmaster and marketer will think out of the box and have his or her own secret formular for promotion which is not on this site and if they are sensible they will not post it as it will give them the edge over the rest of the competitors.

    hey good question:) I actually regret getting in to too much things at once and not focusing on one. The Internet is a big ball of content and is easy to get distracted so what I suggest is to simply take it one step at a time and give yourself the time to grow.

    It truly pays off in the long run. :)

    My mistake was, to make it complicated. The fact is, it's much easier than what we might think off.

    I agree with the OP - not joining DP earlier.

    My other mistake was looking at my blog for like 2 months, no traffic, nothing and not doing more research ahead of time on SEO.

    The wrong thing I did was invest into the spiderweb marketing system. I got a few referrers but I never made any money off of them. They wanted everything for free. Bad mistake.

    Link Exchange I found equal a bunch of garbage traffic alot of time wasted and usually when you searching the other sites you contract numerous viruses. Stay away and stick with seo and trying to get the google traffic.

    Making web sites not tightly focused on one topic. No one will make money with a blog on their cats, politics and the last movie they saw.

    Thanks for your feedback guys.

    Personally, my biggest mistake was wasting months working on blackhat sites (which stopped working after just a little while) when I could have been spending time building something that will last. Oh and that's not to mention the 2 years I spent playing around with MLM before realising I just wasted a lot of money and time!

    Not doing any research before making a blog. The niche thing was a whole new concept back then for me

    Wasting time in the earlier days on Free For All pages. For some reason I got hooked on this thinking it would work. These sites are mainly full of marketers all hyping the same stuff. Now of course it is clear these can even be detrimental to your reputation.

    My biggest mistake was not focusing on the one niche. Also, neglecting other types/forms of marketing like faxes, radio, billboards, print, trade shows.

    Other mistakes I've seen are:
    * Spaming
    * Poor messaging / website design
    * Not managing your reputation
    * Poor customer service resulting in bad testimonials
    * Not KNOWING your target customer (where, why, or when they are interested buying your product) (This is the biggest mistake I see people making all the time)
    * Poor branding and/or non-professional presentation
    * Buying banner ads on non-targeted sites

    My biggest mistake was not focusing on one thing,I always tried to found the best way to do that and that and not actually taking any action.

    Put a plan and follow it,if it doesn't work try something else.

    My biggest mistake when I first started was with yahoo small bussiness they have the worst support that I have came across I had a problem with the cpanel they had I would get page view then it went back down to zero. It took them 5 months to fix which at that time I started rebuilding the site with another host. They kept saying it was working fine . Yahoo shove your small business where the sun don't shine.

    Oh and another mistake I made was setting up a forum thinking that I could make it successfull when I was obviously wrong. No matter how hard I tried I just couldn't get the sign ups so I just quit it and started blogging instead. So far so good, I don't think I'll be quitting this ;)
