What's the official word on re-publishing copyrighted content?

My client got written up in the New York Times; I want to post the article in plain text on his site. I would include multiple links to the original source content, is that enough to avoid any trouble with copyrights?

What if I post just part of the article, with a link to the rest...?

    Thanks

Read about Fair Use in the Copyright Act. Linking doesn't make any difference if you're violating Fair Use or your granted permission.

If that's all it took, I could offer new Hollywood movies that are in the theaters from my site as long as I linked back to the studio. Make much sense? No.
