Whats the next best thing to a .com ???

If the .com is registered but the rest of the extensions are not such as .org .info .net . co.uk etc what should i register to appeal to a worldwide audience?

I've not seen any difference in how Google treats .com and .net. Not sure about the other extensions.

The best would be to go for a .com .. its thats not available a .net is good and if a .net is not available a .biz or .info would be concidered at last.

For targeting a worldwide audience, my second preference would be .NET.

If you site is targeted to a specific country I would go for the ccTLD like .se, .co.uk or .de if the .com is already taken. Otherwise like the others have said: .net, and if .net is also already taken then .biz.

I don't notice any different between .com and .net, I've 301ed several and the rankings have remained the same.

Since Matt Cutts said that Google doesn't do any diffrence between .gov or .edu pages why should the search engines rank a .com or .net diffrent?

First is .com, for a second choice I would definitely go with .net or .org. Depends on the type of your site. Co.uk would be a good choice too but to country specific as said above...

Andreas - re: your comment, this is an ongoing debate, and what Matt Cutts says is somewhat irrelevant as many pointed out since he has his own agenda (i.e. would he really come out and say that .edu/.gov are given preferential treatment to encourage spammers to find loopholes to get links/content on EDUs?) But that's another discussion.

The choice of extension will very much depend on what you want to do with the domain. In many cases ccTLD or .org is better than .NET. From purely resale value, .NET tends to have higher $$.

.net and then .org are the best after .com. After that I would say .us. If you have any sort of UK audience though I would .co.uk up there with .net.
