What's the go with all these directories?

I've noticed alot of the directories being posted here have:

    1. High page rank
    2. No backlinks

Are they using dropped domains or some other dodgy method to get PR?

Are we actually going to benefit from using these 'directories'?

Do people from other parts of the world think we're stupid?

There is a list of 10 pr5 directories. I wonder how many of them are legit...

    Dear Admin and Moderators

This part of the community has become worse and worse over the last few months.
It's not really that hard to keep this sub forum moderated.
All threads should have to be approved after a quick validation check for backlinks.

As it it this is the most spammy sub forum I have ever seen!

    Just a suggestion! :)

Here is a link to the list of directories:

And another thing! Why is my inbox at this forum full of spam! SOME PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!

    lol

Any reason why you haven't posted your inquiry or added your comments in that thread?

And yes, it's very common for someone to buy a dropped domain with foolbar PageRank and quickly put up a directory in an effort to collect a few bucks from the ignorant and foolish souls.

PR chasers aren't unlike dogs in heat, they'll do just about anything once they catch the scent.

If you visit the Solicitations and Announcements forum you'll see that it's quite entertaining.

    Here is an example:

The directories listed on this page are said to be PR6.
    http://belidinar.wordpress.com/2008/07/19/free-pr6-directory/

After looking through most of them they now have either pr3, less and pr0.

Adding your link to a deppreciating website doesnt sound too good does it?

Thanks for your reply. I didnt post reply to that therad yet because I wanted the moderators and admins to see this. Someone really needs to clean up the mess around here and restore this section to it's original, spam free list of actual useful directories and websites.

There PR goes down since they are being punished by google. but yet those sites are not counted in BAD NBD. so links are still worth.

Mods and admins are not going to get involved with any transactions between members - it's solely your responsibility.

I agree that there should be some new rules to curb the link pimping in the Directories forum (let them peddle their crap over in the BST area) - it would go a long way in making this section a better place for real discussion.

Directories on any domain with foolbar PR offering any kind of "paid" inclusion should be treated as just another link sale. It's really nothing more.

Wouldn't our sites be punished too for being linked from a pile of directories being punished by Google?

    Link pimping, thats hilarious! :D

This is just embarassing for Digital Point I would think. This section is basically the souce for all the foolbar directories out there. This is where all the links and promotion comes from. All for the owner to make a quick sale a week later.

No. If that were how it worked, your competitors could submit your site to a bunch of what you call punished directories. Google is not dumb enough to provide your competition an easy way to undermine you.

Jim is correct. If anything, those directory links will help you - even if they are using dropped domains or domains picked up in auction.

You did your research and caught onto the fact the domains were dropped. One normally can just look at the domain and determine if it appropriate for a directory. If it's not, chances the backlinks/PR is from the previous site.

What you have to do is, a little homework with regard to the domain possibly using the wayback machine. Whois will only give the current domain owners info if any. I use this when I submit my client's sites to directories that "say" they have a high PR.
Which we all know isn't where we should be doing our SEO toward.

I suggest to all who submit to directories to check them first in the web.archive.org and see what was on that site 1 year ago.
