    Well, its not big deal,
A portal its a multitude of websites within one single domain, sometimes grouped in subdomains
For example : an auto portal can have wallpapers subdomain / area, games , classifieds, news, etc

a website is a collection of webpages on a single topic.

A web portal is a website that's purpose is to direct you to other websitesm like a link directory or an extensive group of websites.

Apple.com is a website, but yahoo.com is a portal. The popularity of the portal decreased in time as search engines became better and more useful.

I think a portal allows user registrations and is often a user community of some sort. Portals are also most likely to offer a plethora of services then a normal website. I hope that answers your question.
