Someone tell me whats the difference.. if you submit your website to a free PR6 directory or buy a link on a paid pr6 directory.. Either way your site would be listed.. so whats the benefit of paying?

    Here are some differences:

Free directory might take 3 weeks to 13 months for approval, yes I just got a few approvals from a free directory I submitted to around 13 months ago.

Free directory will likely have many more listings so you will probably show up on the 10th, 15th page of listings.

Most free directories don't make enough money to promote their directories very much, many high ranking paid directories spend $100's or $1000's a month on advertising.

In general I have found most paid directories are kept up better (there are exeptions to this rule) lots of older free directories are outdated and left to die.

Good point. So really it all comes down to how the directory is ran so even if a free web directory was ran exactly like a paid directory then really it would be no difference but like you said in most cases i dont think this is what happens.

As far as your webpage being farther down the list most older paid directories have quite a few pages of links for their categories now.. And it seems like alot of directories will start out free then go to paid so that doesnt help that issue.

Really what im wondering is how will the difference in the directories effect how your pagerank will be factored.

Yes it mostly comes down to how the directory is run, since most directories make peanuts from adsense the only way to really make money is to charge for listings. Also there are a lot of problems with free directories getting spammed with 100's of submissions a day from bot submission software, so a flesh-and-blood person does not even see the site, so never clicks on any type of ads.

As to the problem you mentioned about older directories and ones that turned paid, my oldest directory 2ListNow.com ran into that type of situation recently with the Internet ----> Directories and Search Engines category getting filled up with featured and regular links from so many submissions. What I did is create a new top level category Web Directory and Search to help spread things out and create better value for my customers. A lot of free directories will never spend time on doing something like this because they are already bogged down with so much review work and there is no monetary incentive to work any harder.

I did the same thing with my directory.. theres so many submissions to web directories category.. i made new subcategories and i only allow submissions to the type of directory by free, bid, niche and paid. And featured only allowed in Internet/web Directories.
