Lots of people talk about PR not being as important as good SERPS i know a fair amount about PR but not SERPS, other than what is stands for. Has anyone got any thoughts on this or any handy tricks for improving SERPS?

Hope you can help the novice!

SERPs are the actually search results. The actual ranking of your site.

PageRank on the otherhand is one of the criteria Google use for ranking your site and showing it in the SERPs. THere are many other factors apart from this.

    Hope this helps

SERPs are for all search engines. All of them have SERPs (search engine result pages)

PR is PageRank; it only applies to Google. :)

Search Engine Results Page is a listing of web pages returned by a Search Engine in response to a keyword/kephrase query. The results usually include a list of pages with titles, links to the page, and a short description showing where your search terms have matched content from within the page.

In simple terms, Search Engine Results Pages. The pages that display after a query is submitted.

PR - One of Google's methods to measure the importance of a web page according to its popularity and links to other websites.
when you download google toolbar from http://toolbar.google.com , you get to see Page rank of any site you visit in the browser.

Don't concentrate on PR as it's not of much importance but important is if good rankings for your site is coming for different keywords in SERPS.
I think you got the idea !

first research for your site's keywords and then concentrate on those so that if a user searches for that keyword, your site comes in top 10.

Search engine result pages, as the people above me have already pointed out.

A variety of factors can affect your placing in the SERPS, including your backlinks ( with the relevant anchor text), your keyword density, the trust that your site has etc.

Backlinks are for PR. PR is calculated through your quality backlinks.
Traffic is for SERP. The higher the traffic of your page the greater the possibilty that your keyword will be crawled frequently that leads you to be in good SERP position.
