I just wrote a small shell script to find domain names I'm interested in. A whois search under a Linux box of Y4.com says it's available (as well as Veign), GoDaddy says it's an invalid domain name, Name.com says it's been registered. Does anyone have a clue?
Two letter com,net (others?) names are no longer available to the public for registration, despite showing that they are available. .
It's not so much that the records are incorrect, there are some that have expired or are "reserved"...WHOIS is correct, as far as I know - it's just that the general public cannot register one or two letter names in some of the extensions such as .com, .net. .
Thanks. I let the script running and there are a few other things happening as well. For instance, domains like ame.com, asz.com and at4.com have no WHOIS data even though they're registered (so they are false positives for my script). How can you have a site up without filling the required administrative/technical/etc. info?
2 char domains when they expire are taken off the market. You can't register them again. Ever. This might be it.
