    It depends what type of theme you are trying to choose from. First you need to determine free or commercial.

    The advantages of getting commercial ones that you will get good support if you buy from right seller. Free ones are available, however you must be good enough to handle and hack according to your need. Upgradation is one of the main thing in having a photo gallery theme.

    I have been using wordpress for photogalleries for quite some time..The best 2 options that you could use are:

    1. Free Gallery theme by smashing Magazine - smashingmagazine.com/2009/05/04/download-gallery-a-free-wordpress-theme
    2. Elegant themes have 2 themes that you might like:

    - elegantthemes.com/gallery/ephoto
    - elegantthemes.com/gallery/egallery

    If you want a paid one, I would suggest the Photocrati Supertheme. I do web design and I use it for all of my photographers.

    I agree, Photocrati is very nice. I'm contemplating whether to buy it or not. I'm also considering iTheme's Photo Gallery as it's simple enough for my taste :)

    Second themeforest. That's place is amazing. Keyword photography or portfolio and you're going to find some great stuff there.

    No seriously, I do and so I have looked high and low for EXACTLY what you are looking for. You are going to have to pay to get a really good theme for photography. That's the truth.
