What's the best way?

Well as a new guy in SEO I've just found out this:

To rank well on google you need: good content and as many backlinks from as many different IPs with as different but on topic anchor text

That sounds good, at least for Google. What about the other search engines?

I used to have many backlinks from many different IPs with the same anchor text. I was ranking great on other search engines than Google. Just changed the anchor text for most of the backlinks. The restult are as follows: climbed slowly in Google SERPS. Dropped suddently in other SERPS.

What should I do to rank well in all SEs?

Google should be your main priority. Rank #1 on Google and you can forget the rest IMHO.

As a new person to SEO, I am going to give you some advice... what dcristo just said, ERASE IT FROM YOUR MEMORY...

To focus on one and forget about the other is insane. If it was that way, Shawn would not have given Yahoo and MSN their own categories. MSN and Yahoo!, seem to at this moment, enjoy properly used <h> tags, at least in my experience. Others may have more to add, but focus on proper SEO across the board. Don't just focus on Google... *shakes finger at dcristo*

hes right its a bad idea to put all your eggs in one basket (google) as what happens when/if they change their algo and your site takes a big dive? youd wish you paid more attention to msn/y!

I dont agree to a certain extend. It depends which niche your are targeting. 99% of my visitors are coming from Google, Yahoo doesn't bring me any traffic at all. Might be the topic of the website. Never ever did any link building for Google nor Yahoo. All natural gained backlinks. You would expect the two engines to bring the same traffic but they dont. Google's marketshare is much larger then Yahoo bringing visitors. Thus you could say it is more important to optimize for Google.

Ok let me rephrase that. Dont put all your eggs in the one basket, but if your ranking well in Google, be content, and move on to other sites instead of worrying about the minimal traffic you can get from the other SEs.
