Forums are definetly a great way to go. Also, publish an article with your new site in the signature. Make sure the article is worthwhile and that could even generate you some traffic.
I am sure that it was a fluke, but I got indexed in less than a week simply by publishing an article.
Hi Eddie, It's probably not a fluke - most article directories, and especially the top ones, are crawled constantly by the SEs. When the crawlers come across your article, they follow the link to your site. Definitely a good way to go... Sam
