What's the best way to improve my PR?

    Well guys and gals,

I am new to all this search engine stuff, so I am curious how to go about moving up from PR4? If I could just move up to PR5 I'd be happy, lol.

I know people say link exchanges but I don't think links would belong on my main page, do I make a page just for that? Is it ok to do exchanges with sites whose topics have nothing to do with what my site is about? I am just trying to learn here. :D

What else do I need to do?

Oh and I am looking to do this for my design site, Kalina Web Designs, the link is in my sig.

    Hello Kalina,
Links are definately the way to go. You might consider setting up a link directory of some sort as you will no doubt be accumulating several "Hundred" links if not thousands. They seem to add up after a while.:)

Your best bet is find links from sites that are related or similar in theme as yours.

Thank you so much ResaleBroker, I don't mind making a link directory on my site at all. :D

Links, links and more relevant links... get hold of as many as you can. I would not suggest putting the reciprocals on the homepage. You should create a separate section/page for the reciprocal links.

This is just my personal opinion, but I think you'd be much better off with one-way links (not reciprocal). One-way links will take you up in the SERPS.

Think about starting a new site and linking out from there...

3 way links are the future ;)

Harver, of course one-way are the best but that's a bit ego-centric to ask from any webmaster.

"Hi, I want you to link to me... Here's the URL and anchor text!"

I'm sure a lot will tell you to **** off. Or at least ignore you.

Tell them you have a link to them and want one back. That's the better way to do it.

I agree, so I started a thread for 3-way link exchange. Still no takers :(

TLD, I'd trade w/ you. However, my sites are not webmaster related. If you decide that you're willing to move outside that scope, let me know. All I do is set up non-reciprocal 3 & 4 way links. It has worked wonders.

I believe Schlottke suggested to me a while back that you Google your topic +add url. Then, if you have say other topic pages you do the same for them.

I was wondering though, if I have a backlink from someone with a PR3, will that push me over the hump if I have enough of them? Do I need more PR3 than PR4 to get to PR5 etc....

Thanks for all the help and advice everyone! :D

That's hilarious! I guess that guy is stubborn and stuck in his thinking, he'll see in time that he's wrong when his PR doesn't improve. :D

Can someone tell me what SERP stands for?

I wanted to buy ads on a newspaper a while ago...and I wanted static links. Ads person told me (this was from their webmaster) that spiders only crawl the first 200 words of a page then move onto the next page. Talk about a webmaster from 10 years ago. People believe all sorts of things, just cuz they don't keep up with the way it works now.

I wouldnt call it 10 year old webmastering, I would call it an old spider. They do still exist I am sure.

    Do you think?

Even the spider that runs my site search (which is basic) reads more than that.

What would be the point in having a spider that only reads the first 200 words?

Maybe the aglo driving the search would only look at the first 200, but I'm sure that any spider around today would read more than that.
