Your going to get a million of the same answers, but all will follow around each other. It will basically come down to you going through some trial and error.

Some link building strategies may work well for you and not for others or vise versa.

I personally build backlinks for my sites and my clients' sites by way of Article Marketing, Press Releases and Social Bookmarking. All of these work very well, but some work better than others.

Good Luck, and if you need any help, let me know, I would be more than happy to.

Send out personal e-mails one at a time. Getting links is the most important thing for your website, do not waste your time getting hundreds of low quality blog and forum links. Get high quality links from high quality sites, and build relationships.

I find social bookmarking will get you indexed rather quickly, but it doesn't seem to do much for placement in the search engines ... I guess it would if you tried REALLY hard. But I agree, blog commenting, forum posts, and possibly hubpages and squidoo lenses might help.

hubpages.com and squidoo.com ... they're basically glorified article sites. They're good for backlinks I would say if you make sure to bookmark anything you create.

K so do you have to create separate articles for them and add in-text links?

Well, seperate articles so you don't get a duplicate content penalty? I suppose so, although I'm not sure what the verdict is nowadays on duplicate content. And, yes, you would add the links into the content. I just read on another thread though, that google only indexes one backlink per site ... I guess per page. So, I would assume for that every page you have, you'd write an article and refer to your website. Honestly though, I've never had any luck using JUST these pages. Make sure you use other methods as well.

    blog commenting
    directories
    forums
    social websites
    link exchange

these are all effective ways to build links.

also go on your competitors website and check their back links and see where they link to.

You could try reciprocal link exchanges, but one way links pointing to your site is best ... I see no harm is browsing the buy/sell/trade link forum here ... I've had some decent success ... you can get some decent PR pages for $10-$15 permanent at times if you keep your eye out. Just don't rely on this method too much and keep in mind that google doesn't like when people buy links. Also, I completely advise AGAINST using a link broker such as textlinkads.com ... I think google is working hard to take them down. If you are caught buying from them, it is likely that the site linking to you will be banned or turned to PR0.

I think he meant a link on a page with a decent PR. However, as he pointed out, remember that Google does not like paid links. Personally if you have money to spend, I think it would be more worth it to hire someone to get you backlinks across the web.
