What's the best way to find totally accurate list of backlinks

It seems every back link checker I use gives me a different number. Also, there is no way using the links:url in Yahoo can be totally correct. Finally, my backlinks checker in Google's webmaster tools hasn't been working for a long time.

I have quite a few links on high PR sites that never show up in these backlink checkers. However, I checked and there should be no reasons why they aren't being indexed.

Any advice on where to go or what to use to get a "total" list of all backlinks, or is this impossible? And why are so many of my backlinks not showing up anywhere?

yahho site explorer seems to give the best result imo theres no way of getting a result with 100% accuracy though unless you do it manually which would take forever.

Doing it manually is a good method to get the number of backlinks. Type in "link:URL" in Google. You can also use backlinkwatch.com. :)

I haven't found a reliable way personally... Yahoo is too high, and WMT is too low.

Google will only show some (it's like "at least these" list), while Yahoo displays way more then you actually have (double and tripple counting some). I've also used some other tools but results vary and are never accurate. So maybe use a combination to get a general idea, but take it with a grain of salt.

I use Google Webmaster tools but it can be confusing..sometimes if you check text/link you wrote it comes up in Google serps but not in the webmaster tools...it obviously had to be indexed though to show up in search so I'm not sure if even that is 100%
