What's the best way to check for backlinks?

I have used several programs to check , but they all seem to share different results. Can someone suggest the best and most reliable thing that you use to see how many backlinks you have - and where they are coming from?

    Thanks,
    Cindy

Hi Cindy - I use Web CEO, but I have to be honest, I am not sure how or indeed if you can get an accurate result from Google so I'd be interested to know what other people are using too.

Agreed. Yahoo is the best. Forget about any third party tools.

I just checked out the iwebtools one and it's really good! I'm not sure about their pr testing though - they said that dp had a pr0... pretty sure that's not true :) I also tried out the backlink master and that was good - except that I feel a bit weird installing little things like that because they usually haunt me for ages.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. If anyone has anything else to add to this list I think it could be a relly useful resource for ppl to check out :)

    Why the fuss.

Enter linkdomain:domain.com -site:domain.com at http://search.yahoo.com and you are done. That automatically gets you to Yahoo Site Explorer, I think, too.

I had a look at the yahoo one and it was really nice! They said I have over 300 sites linked. They have even indexed my directory and forum (which are attached to the main site). It was rally encouraging to see that all of this extra work that I have been putting into the site has been noticed by a search engine..yay!

From all the sources I pull backlinks information from (see link in my signature) Yahoo Site Explorer provides the most reliable and up-to-date information. Google simply lies about your backlinks in their report because they depend on backlinks so much in their ranking algo and they don't want you to game the system. MSN, Altavista and Alltheweb that I also use simply do not have enough reach to know about enough of my backlinks.

I've been using yahoo site explorer as well... would be nice if they would group the backlinks by domains though.... I can't get past the first 1000...
