Let's assume you just finished a site and are ready to start promoting it. Let's say that you plan on spending a full 8 hour shift doing nothing but SEO related activities.

What would be the best use of those 8 hours?

Use google trends and google keywords to find related keyword with traffic.

Optimise your site for these keywords.

purchase some dirs submissions services, or if you dont have money find alist and submit yourself.

Wrie a few articles and pay someone to submit them. Submit to ezine articles also.

Create a squidoo and hubpages about your site.

Create some free blogs with a landing page with links to your new site.

Buy some blog commenting, or find do follow blogs and make relevant content with a backlink.

Write a press release and submit to popular press sites.

Find "on-topic" forums and do a little backlinking.

Make sure you have good internal linkings.

Get into social networking sites and then get "friends" that have like interests of your site's theme.

I'd say comment posting. Much better than social bookmarking sites IMHO.

    - Check important pages on your site for proper keywords, meta description, title and content.
    - Social bookmarking your website and important pages (dont do may bookmarks on same site in a day)

Many of you commented on article writing. I don't get this because doesn't that create a lot of duplicate content? Any insight to that would be helpful. Also, where are the best places to post your articles?

After creating a site, the next step would be the introduction of the sites to search engines. Submitting to social bookmarking sites would greatly help them with this scenario. I'll also do a keyword research and begin my on-page optimization.
