Well, I would say NVU, which is free and produces clean code as well.

    http://www.nvu.com/index.php
    From the Site:
"Finally! A complete Web Authoring System for Linux desktop users as well as Microsoft Windows and Macintosh users to rival programs like FrontPage and Dreamweaver. Nvu (which stands for "new view") makes managing a web site a snap. Now anyone can create web pages and manage a website with no technical expertise or knowledge of HTML."

Yeah, NVU isn't bad. And it's free. But there is no support, obviously, since it's free (though there is a small forum with some helpful users). As a beginner, I had to abandon it and I picked up Frontpage mainly because there was a lot of documentation to go along with it.

Then Microsoft announced they were killing Frontpage. So I think Dreamweaver is the way to go. If you're serious about this thing, you may want to bite the bullet and go with Dreamweaver. :) If you're not sure you're serious, many web hosts offer Sitebuilder--an integrated authoring tool that's easy to use.

It all comes down to how serious you are. If you want to produce state of the art web pages/sites, you will learn the languages; html, css, ECMAScript (javascript), and PHP[1]. Plus, you will become knowledgeable of database configuration and maintenance, and will become reasonably proficient in SQL.

It is sufficient to start with html + css. It's not rocket science, and the quicker you get into it, the easier it is. Applications like Dreamweaver, Frontpage and Nvu make it seem easy, but are not capable of supporting the full power of well structured, semantic html and css. Of the lot, Nvu tends to create the best markup. DW has good site management tools, but turns out crap for code. Frontpage is a waste of bits.

In truth, the only tool you need is a good text editor. Emacs is the best, most powerful text editor, period. Vi(m) is close behind. Both are meant for the heavy duty user who virtually lives in their editor[2]. There are many other good editors, and each have their proponents. Notepad and their ilk are simply, um, too simple(minded) for productive use of your time.

So, your decision. If you're going to be developing for your own site, and aren't concerned about taking full advantage of the web, by all means use a helper app. Take the time to learn Nvu and go with it.

If you plan to develop web pages/sites professionally, you need to be professional, and learn the craft. DW and its like are not the way to go, a powerful editor is.

    cheers,

    gary

[1] The ASP/.net stack makes it very difficult to produce modern markup—it tries to be too helpful. It's 'easy' to use, but tries very hard to generate crap for code.

[2] Both Emacs and Vi(m) are so powerful and productive that they have been the centers of multiple religious wars between their users. Personally, I don't care which you use as long as you understand that if you choose Vi(m), you're settling for second best, ;) and other editors are relative toys.

I'd agree with everyone who says dreamweaver - but i'd also add to that Photoshop. If you want to make a really, really good website you need to start on paper - transfer that design into Photoshop, cut and splice everything up and then use dreamweaver to bring it all together. Dreamweaver though is way ahead of anything else out there - when i first started design i started off with NetObjects Fusion, that was quite a few years ago lol
