What software would you recommend for building link exchange? Something that automates the whole process and preferably free would be good.

    Thanks?

It depends on what a "whole process" means and what features you expect. I'm a long-standing user of LinkAssistant, it's a very good tool, but it may or may not fit your specific needs. However, you might give it a try.

I also agree with the previous poster in that what you ask is a bit of an oxymoron ;) There ain't no such thing as a freeware SEO tool that completely automates the link exchange process. Free link building tools that I've seen did nothing useful.

Anyway, here's a good link to a comparison of a variety of SEO tools for link exchange: http://www.articlealley.com/article_55942_62.html. Take your pick.

    Hope this helps,

Do it yourself. Creating loads of crappy free links will do no good at all.

Well, since I posted this I learned about Duncan Carver's Link Management Assistant which offers all the typical features you would come to expect in a link exchange program....and best of all it's free.

Are there any other free ones?

I looked at the ones posted above but some of them have a pretty expensive price tag attached to them.

Sometimes but not always. There are plenty of great products and services around that are free.

Course there are. For me it's just more convenient to have a single link building app at the ready to take care of all my link development needs ;)

But of course I use other (free) tools as well.

The fact there are dishonest people out there doesn't mean all link building tools are evil ;) There are excellent tools that do exactly what they promise -- nothing more, nothing less.

While I don't like server-side link exchange tools either, in your case it should've been quite easy to spot the problem: You can always look into the source of the script and see if it does anything fishy.
