Reading forums on DP, webmasterworld, and sitepoint. It's a complicated subject that requires many days of research to get the basics.

To start you off: article submissions, forum posts, comments on sites, directory listings, yahoo answer type sites....

The best way is manually submit yourself. Hiring someone is ok but often times they submit to crap directories that do nothing for you.

Looking for related niches to what you site is about and trying to link to them is the best way. Other ways include submitting to several directories. If you go to Solicitations & Announcements here on the forum, you can find many to submit to.

I have written several articles on link building on my SEO Blog, they may help you out.

    Good luck.

Actually contacting a related site and asking them to link to you, and making your site give them a reason WHY to link to you, will get you the most powerful links. I used to have an article about my subject w/ links to my site on Wikipedia and then I got banned... but before I got banned people had cut and pasted portions into their blogs, links and all. I believe those links now pass PR juice. But buying links may be the fastest way to get poweful links, if you're in a hurry.
