Whats the best place to start?

I decided to start my first ever internet business site so spent a bunch of dollars for the template & the domain and a lot of time developing the site myself, optimizing it for search engines and manually submitting it to various search engines and web directories. Its been around 2 months and forget about the sales but i hardly get any visits, and maybe even that because of the ad in my signature :(

Finally i started working on my first php powered site. Its almost completed now but i am not sure whether its worth selling and if it is then what should be its price. I am kind of confused as it works fine but have few drawbacks like use of .txt files inside of a database for data storage so it limits the site features, thou from the positive point of view because of this its very easy to install and use unless you want some really advance features. I'am still not sure thou.

What should be my next step? where should i start where i have a good and quick chance of earning some money instead of just spending it ( as well as doing all that work ) and getting absolutely nothing after investing all that.

I get most of my traffic from my signiture link. I also give people a reason to come back. With my image hosting site these are the three main ways i get traffic:

    1) Direct (return)
    2) DP forum sig link
    3) V7N forum sig link

To make it work actually put a link in your sig and dont put smileys or colour because it looks like spam. also provides quality advice so that people want to know more about you and decide to go to your site. Hope it helps.

First of all, most of the time it takes a long time, 3+ months for a site to start showing results, so keep working and hope for good results soon.

First, decide what you want to do

Do you want to build a great content site and then monetize it by selling ad space, links, using AdSense, recommending affiliate products...?

Do you want to sell your own products?

Do you want to sell private label rights...

Whatever direction you choose, make sure to:

Pick a narrow niche that still has good profit potential - don't try to be everything to everyone.

Focus on building your list from day 1

Provide real value and try to be different from your competitors

Don't expect too much in the short term, there is a learning curve to overcome and the whole game takes persistance and patience.

    Good Luck.

But what do you think my contents site should be about? What kind of contents get the most visits and good adsense revenue?

Getting traffic from search engines can take time. There are plenty of people who make money just by using links in their sig and the like.

Here are two tips that I'd suggest for you while waiting for the search engines to kick in (make sure you still try to optimize them):

First, try to find relevant forums for whatever niche(s) you are in. Try to add some quality posts with your link in your sig, and you should get some great leads that way.

Try teaming up with a larger site if possible. Find a larger site that you aren't competing with and see if there's anything you can offer them that would benefit both of you. Perhaps you can offer a free guide that they can sell but that will offer you a few leads? There are plenty of ways to be creative here, but one good deal made here can result in tons of sales even without search engine traffic.

As a last resort, you can also try a very cheap budget on Adwords to get a little extra boost if it's not too expensive. If it is expensive, try optimizing your site more and getting more specific and unique keywords (try to target it really well).

    Hope that helps for starters.

Joke sites and scripts to store jokes, receipes are very common. What's unique about yours? Also, what sort of Adsense ads were you expecting to be relavent and clicked on a joke site. I had a joke site once, I drove some traffic to it with 7search.com and others but it is not a good sort of site for Adsense revenue.

As far as what would work well with Adsense, think about areas like business, legal, technical, and financial (where money is spent by companies that spend lots of money per sale).
