I think it depends on what your needs are, for example:

    - How much time, effort and other resources you want to invest, to qualify, to integrate, to manage
    - The level of risk you want to be exposed to, like personal guarantees for direct merchant accounts or potential random account closures and seizures common with PayPal
    - The "features' that are important to you, like recurring billing, customer data portability, hosted payment page or SAAS, digital goods fulfillment, human support, settlement timing, affiliate and marketing systems...

...and of course how much your willing to pay, ranging from direct merchants accounts at around 2%+.$0.25 to about 9%+ $1.00 for companies like ClickBank or Plimus.

Yes paypal is kind of pricy for their services... but it's worth it. It protects the buyer and seller. Especially if you're dealing with physical goods, of course you must have backed up by tracking number or delivering goods receipt as a proof.

The problem is that clients can -easily- do chargebacks on digital products :(

Yes sometimes it would be problematic. But after all you have no production cost whatsoever for the products... only maintenance cost and intellectual value... so IMHO there is no problem.... if your content is good enough for the digital products, you will be convert enough even though there is bad apple among the buyers. ;)

Yeah with digital products, it's easy for Consumers to chargeback. It's usually not that much of an issue financially to take the loss here and there as mentioned by Williammfelix, but there's lots of horror stories about getting one or two chargebacks and accounts getting closed, settlements and reserves seized, etc, no matter who your processing with Paypal, ClickBank, or your own merchant account.

I would advise any merchant to research these providers directly to find which serve their needs best when looking to decrease ecommerce risks. Most are very easy to integrate and they work with any gateway/ merchant account/ 3rd party reseller, etc.

    Geolocation, Reputation, etc:
    - Maxmind
    - Quova

Device ID, Risk scoring, Proxy busting, ect:
    - Kount (sister company to ClickBank)
    - ThreatMetrix
    - iovation
    - Retaildecisions
    - the3rdman

    Consumer data verification:
    - GBgroup
    - 192 dot com
    - 555-1212
    - Integrity.aristotle
    - RSA

Thanks for your inputs ;) Interesting points of views and share of information. In fact i'm thinking about a processor + delivery solution such as e-junkie for my digital products projects.

Paypal is the best for the moment because is easy to use and not give you too much restrictions to use it ofcourse is free too.

Other alternative is Alertpay or Liberty Reserve.

Try secureglobalprocessing.com, they deal with high risk companies and they have a high cb ratio, i think it's 5%. PayPals or any other similar processing companies are no good, it will shut down as soon as you get a few cb.

    Just my 2 cent...
