i don't have any programming related certificate even programming wasn't my career but i had a health problem made me change my career to work from home so i started to study programming and web designing on my own
and I've been programming and work on my own projects for years
i'm planning to get a zend certificate but it requires me to go to the test center and i can't because of my condition
is there any good online certificate i can take that will add to my resume
    i found the following
    http://www.w3schools.com/cert/default.asp
    and
    http://www.brainbench.com/xml/bb/common/testcenter/alltests.xml

    best regards

Zend Cert would be the only one worth the time or effort and even then they aren't worth much in the development world. Since you will be self-employed I'd be more focused on building a client list and a solid track record. Now if you are going to do something on the hardware side of things then go get a few certs.

Maybe others will debate me on this but certs are pretty worthless in this field. Degrees or experience.

No debate, MockA. I've never hired anyone based on a certificate, and I've never refused to hire anyone based on lack of a certificate. Certificates don't write code, experienced programmers do. (The last guy I hired was to maintain old COBOL programs - he was a plumber who taught himself programming, and he was one of the best programmers I ever had working for me. He had a license to do plumbing, but no paper for programming.)

that's really encouraging to know that employers don't care about certificates or degrees
i agree with all of you, experience is the one thing should employer care about
i know a guy has a computer science degree but the didn't practice enough and some guys with no degree at all can write code better than him
i asked the question just to know if i search for a job in programming dose it really matter to have a degree or certificate
but it seems that it doesn't matter

It doesn't matter with some companies. With others, you won't get in for an interview if you don't have a degree. Even a dozen certificates won't get you an interview with those companies.

It depends on who sets the job requirements. HR wants to see paper, because they have no idea how to find out how much you know. The head of the programming group or department can find out how much you know in 5 minutes or less.

I've never been happy working in a company that values a piece of paper more than it values the ability to figure out how to solve the current problem.

I have friend who spent 3 years in university, studying for an art-history degree, he can neither draw, nor remember last week.

A certificate is useful to keep track of learning, and that is all. Programmers worth hiring can demonstrate this to anyone with knowledge in this field, as already pointed out. Anyone without knowledge in this field should not be charged with hiring anyone in the first place, for the good of the company they work for. A certificate only ensures that you attended some lessons not that you understood them, not that you can apply that knowledge in the real world, and not that you have. These are the things that are important.

It's also worth mentioning that it's not always as simple as you reeling off all the companies you have worked for, some of us sign an NDA, an important part of this cutting edge industry is to honor those agreements. It stimulates competition, forcing much more research, ultimately, producing more knowledge, and driving our industry forward ...
