I use adwords to see what the competition is like for different keywords, and how often they're searched. It doesn't give you any numbers, but allows you to compare different keywords relevant to your niche.

    An answer in 2 parts:
First, I have a link to an online search tool for frequency of search per keyword.
Just PM me and I'll give it to you.

Secondly, I want to talk about "semantic relevance"

Yes, top searched keywords are important, but semantically related words are
important to put next to / near the anchor text in your link.

Example: Your link text says "Buy Bananas".
Your link will perform better if it's surrounded by semantically relevant words.

Example #2: Get Fruits, Buy Bananas and Plantains

Once you know what people are searching for, you need to optimize the anchor text.
You can do this with a semantics research method that will tell you
EXACTLY which words google thinks is similar.
This can MULTIPLY how effective your backlinks are by 100 times.

PM me for the link and details.

Yes I have had great success using a combination of the above mentioned keyword tool, along with Google Trends.

While google trends won't show you absolute search volume, you can compare different keywords in order to get a relative idea as to how keywords rank against eachother.

I second the adwords keyword tool. Good stuff. Also, try asking your friends, "if you were going to do an internet search for (x product), what would you type in?

    That goes a long way.
