If I need a big resolution image, usually I use jpeg, but if I need a small image, like icon, I will use png.
Png also used when I need a transparent background.

Nail on the head to be honest, it really depends on what you want to do with the image, each format as advantages and disadvantages.

GIF and PNG both are equally good for logo graphics because these bitmap files can be easily imported by any Office applications.JPEG are generally used for photography.

Agreed. I was always taught to use JPGs for photographs and PNGs and GIFs for images with more blocky colors (logos, cartoons, etc). It's sort of impossible to say one is better than the other since they all have different uses.

PNG is the best since you can use it with transparent background. :D

It depends on what you are exporting the file for, the use of the file depends on which file type is "best".

To keep the science & controversy out of this post I will give you my "Bests"

    JPG - Web (RGB)

PNG - Web & Flash Videos (Best used for transparent objects, RGB)

    GIF - Web (RBG)

    TIF - Print (CMYK)

Hope this helps you & your friend

Everyone is saying PNG is the best but I usually use JPEG unless I'm printing something. Then I usually print from a high resolution PDF. I always use GIF for animations though.

PNG is the newest one and the best for web. It has the least detail loss compared to jpg and gif. But it really depends on your application.

There is not a best format for any graphic: If it's a photo taken from a digital camera, use jpg, if it's a designed graphic, use png, or gif if you need an animated image.

    For Quality use

    JPG (non transparent)
    PNG (Transparent)

Use gif image only if you want to reduce size of the image .

PNG because it supports transparency and has better quality than GIF and JPEG
