PNG (portable network graphic) is the best graphic format because it is loseless, so the quality of the picture/graphic won`t be lost, and sometimes it`s size it`s even smaller than Jpeg or Gif (some sliced website graphics), but most of the times it`s size is bigger than other compressed image formats since it has no loss in quality.

PNG is best. Because saving and restoring a PNG image doesn't reduce its quality.JPEG doesn't work well with simple graphics.

png can work with transparency and is better for simple graphic with a lot of text, as it keeps the letters sharper than jpg. jpg is better for photos with many different colors.

Except picture quality is better in PNG than JPG... but PNG files tend to be larger.

It all depends on what you are wanting to do... for stuff being viewed in web browsers, illustrations tend to be best in SVG (since they are vector-based and infinitely scalable).

For example, the smilies and main logo on this site are SVG format, so they look good when zoomed in:

For raster (non-scalable) images, PNG is good when you need multiple levels (alpha) transparency. For decent quality and smaller size (but no transparency), JPG is what you would want to use.

The best image format all just comes down to the individual image and what you are using it for.

PNG is the newest format, and the best imho. I believe it uses lossless compression, where JPG can really muddy up your images if you don't have the settings set high. I think PNG is smaller than high quality JPG also. And then there's alpha channel information which blows transparent GIF's out of the water.

If you're using a modern browser, I see no reason not to use PNG for everything.

I've always known that PNG was the best, but I mostly use JPG because it can be opened by more people.

JPG is best if the small loss of quality won't really have an effect.
PNG has highest quality and also supports transparency.
GIF is really only any good for animated images.

It depends on what you want or desire, if you need quality and you do not need the memory size to worrie you just go with PNG, if you have a plain 1-2 colored image definitly choose GIF, and if you need one that has a good quality, does not preserve transparency, and doesnt take that much of a size go with JPEG

haha, I think no one can say for sure which one is the best since they all have different purposes, I use png for low res or transparent images, jpg for high res and not transparent ones and gifs for animations, works pretty well for me
