According to my personal opinion you should use JPEGs for photos and other images with millions of colours.
    Thanks

I usually use PNG for transparent backgrounds and JPEG is a good format as well - as long as it is set to a high quality .
GIF format is used for animated graphics.

PNG is the best format near me, especially for transparency (its way better than .gif) - but for higher resolution graphics, there is nothing better than a JPG

For quality: PNG > JPEG > GIF
For Size: PNG > JPEG > GIF

For me: I'd prefer PNG format, because it is clearer.

JPGs for general web use. GIFs for limited color palette images, for quick loading (buttons, especially). PNGs are for raw images in which quality is more important, which is a subjective thing.

You don't want to use a PNG for buttons, you don't want to use GIFs for portraits, and so on. The file formats still exist for a reason. PNGs are not godmode for file extensions by any stretch of the imagination. All serve a unique purpose in design.

I use JPEG for photos and PNG for pretty much everything else. PNG is definitely best for things like icons which need transparency and ideally to be saved lossless.

As a cartoonist, PNG's work best for me. They have much more clarity particularly for simpler colors, ideal for logo's, cartoons, web graphics. However, JPEGs are typically better for photo's as they deal better with gradients. GIFS are crap, unless you are animating them or have very little webspace.

If the images are for the Web or online, use PNG.
If the images are for print, use TIFF.
