What's the best format to sell a movie?

I have a flash movie on my site, and I've been getting a lot of requests from visitors who want to purchase the movie.

I've been getting conflicting advice, so I'll ask you DP experts:

What is the best format to make the movie downloadable so that it will work seemlessly for non-techie people?

    Thanks in advance:)

I'm not an expert, so take my reply with a grain of salt.

But I do create videos for some companies. Lately, I've been making them in .wmv format, as the Windows Encoder is free and fairly good at compression. Then, I create a .wmx file (text, XML) and my pages use that for the link. So people click, download the .wmx file, and that loads in Windows Media Player and starts the .wmv file with no/little delay.

When I really wanted people to save videos, I distributed .mpg files. Those are bigger and can hurt your bandwidth. But people love them.

Either of the following would be fine as they open by default with Windows Media Player: wmv, mpeg, avi.
