    DMOZ ...hmm I know its extremely hard to get into that one, but also that its reputation is being hurt by some of its moderators who are misusing their privileges to sell inclusions .

    As most of the previous posts confirmed, the best free directory is DMOZ. Google feeds from their information ... making a listing at DMOZ (IF you can get it) even more attractive.

    A few days ago I found this list. This specific page deals with free directories but elsewhere on their website they list paid and niche directories. Hope this helps.

    Sorry, wanted to add: I haven't gone through the entire list myself. So I cannot tell you if they all still exist and whether they are all still free.
