What's the best ad network for a new site?

    Hi there,

I'd like to convert the remaining ad space available on my site (read: all of it, since I don't have any sold yet) to something that would be text-link-based and would create an effective revenue of $0.01 per visitor.

The site in question is http://www.searchenginefriendlylayouts.com . I just launched it yesterday, so that's why I don't have any ads sold yet.

I'm in touch with Google AdSense, and I know I'm ineligible for Yahoo! SM (I'm Canadian.) What else is there in a similar vein that I would be eligible for?

    Thanks.

You could try out the FastClick network (formerly ValueClick network) if you're interested in more of a CPM basis method. AdSense is the way to go for CPC though.

I'm not overly particular in terms of CPC or CPM, actually. I can deal with a CPC of $0.10 if it means an effective CPM of $0.01.

Mind you, I haven't done anything like this in 6 years (since my last advertiser-based site was shut down by a Christian fundamentalist group...long story), so my knowledge is somewhat outdated.

For CPC (cost per click) networks, your CPM is based on how many clicks you get within your X amount of pageviews. I get xx,xxx pageviews/day so I receive a $x or $xx CPM rate. I would expect you would get a higher CPM rate than 1 cent. Just depends on your traffic really. Fastclick pays somewhere around 16 cents CPM I believe (at least from my experience with them). really just depends on the network...

    * nods * That's what I was basing the calculation off of.

Anyway, AdSense approved me (13 minutes and 25 seconds after I got the email validation confirmation deal...so either I must be on to something, or Google's standards are lowered). So I'm gonna put it on later tonight.

I just added the AdSense, so we'll see what happens. Thanks for the tip, though! :)

If you just launched the site yesterday, that means you have very little traffic, correct? If so, then I'm not sure if there's any CPM network that would take you. Every single network has a CPM limit, usually over 1000 uniques a day. Usually more. In that case, Adsense might be your best bet for now until your traffic picks up.

This is true, jackburton2006. But I think I need to clear something up that I haven't explained very well (my bad on that):

I'm not looking for a CPM network as such. I'm looking for any network with an effective CPM of $0.01 per page view, ideally.

For example, let's say Google AdSense offers $1.00 per clickthrough on average for the ads they present on my site. The CTR is 0.01, or 1%.

    So...1% clickthrough x $1.00 per clickthrough = $1.00 per every 100 page views = $10.00 per every thousand page views = $0.01 effective CPM.

I'm not sure if that makes sense or not, but hopefully it's a little clearer.

Oh man, I'd like to help you out, but that's way too much math and work for me, and I've never been good at math or working. :)

I think the confusion is you're saying CPM as if it were Cost Per Impression. It's not, it's Cost Per 1000 Impressions (the M is Roman or something for 1000).

So, you're really looking for a CPM of $10 to get your target of $.01 for each visitor.

You can definately acheive this with Adsense, but it's not guaranteed of course.

Yeah, I see where I got some stuff mixed up in terms of the explanation, but yeah, that's my ultimate goal summed up nicely sayyes. I stand with my explanation humbly corrected. :)

So far (albeit very early), it's at $4.50 CPM. Not reading anything into it yet, but it's encouraging (even if they interpret the word "column" as something to do with a house instead of something to do with a layout.)
