It's standard PR. PR leads to links indirectly. People are reminded of your site, may link to it because they liked it already. Only newsletters that get posted online count as links. E-mail in itself isn't a place to get backlinks.

If your readers are websavvy they may bookmark links in your site they followed to delicio and that sort of place. But even those links don't count as backlinks, but as more PR.

I think that's correct as well, though I'd not put it passed Google to [at least partially] watch gmail links... I mean, they already bot them for ads, it's only a matter of time for other things (and spam/bulk mail is easily filtered)...but I think that's maybe food for another thread ;)

I think that newsletters actually do very little for direct PR/SERP/or other SEO perks, but also think they can help a great deal indirectly. It does keep the product in the mind of the consumer, and can lead to additional visits by people that forgot you existed. It can also result in the newsletter getting forwarded to friends and family that may have an interest in the subject, or even links from personal pages...

I say, if you have the resources, then go ahead and give a newsletter a try, it'll help more then harm (unless you are spamming, so maybe consider an OPT-IN system, or at the very least make it easy to OPT-OUT).

i think there will be two benefit for the newletter promotion?

    * you will get direct traffic to your site when people has clicked to your link.
    * people will remeber your site and this may cause them to give link your site

One other advantage to newsletters is precisely that it's a way to connect with customers / visitors without a search engine in the middle. Focusing on the serps as the only way to get visitors is not a good idea. A newsletter is a way to connect with those people who care enough about what you have to offer, to actually sign up. It's your core user-base right there.

Another great point from kh7 that I felt needed quoting :D

Make your core members happy, they will tell their friends, make their friends happy, and the circle continues! A newsletter can help make them happy, and keep your site fresh in their minds...especially if the newsletter is offering something new and fresh with each mailing (regurgitating the same old stuff and people will start to opt out, or click the spam button).
