    Google started penalizing link exchanges and thats why people started moving towards directory submissions to get one way backlinks.It also helps u to be found by people who browse through blog directories.

    You can get some good quality backlinks depending on the directory along with traffic if it happens to be a popular one. The trick is finding the right directories to sub to.
