Whats the 2nd Best TLD to use to Rank in the USA in Google?

    I have a UK website
i want to run a USA version

I am currently using the .co.uk for the UK version and the .com as a blog
ive done way too many blog posts to scrap the blog
so what TLD is the next best to use to rank highly in Google except for .net and .com
i own all the others except that .net which is a shame

im thinking .org? or is it .US ?

The second best tld you can buy is .org. You could use .edu or .gov if you could be issued the proper licenses.

I second kraran and Deus Ex regarding .org being the second-best.

As for .info - leaving the ranking factor aside, DO NOT use .info for a reputable site as .info is known to be an extremely cheap TLD and my guess is that you don't want to come off as being cheap in front of your visitors. Best to go with .us, if .org doesn't fit you for some reason.

Regarding .edu and .org - obviously both are very powerful but unless you're an acredited educational institution or a U.S. government organization there's almost no way you can get your hands on those.

For me these tld's have performed the best in Google.com (in order):

    • .com
    • .org
    • .net
    • .info (but required lots of linkbuilding)
    • .biz (yes, this tld worked for me :D)
    Good luck! :D

It really doesn't matter to google. What matters is that .com is what everyone considers the standard. You can't have good branding without it. If you're worried about people remembering, visiting and maybe linking to your site use a .com by all means. Otherwise it really doesn't matter.

Right, for ranking it doesn't matter at all and I'd always pick a .com if possible, even if it has some "addon" instead of an .org

The TLD doesn't matter from a ranking persepective as long as it's a non-ccTLD.

.com, .net, .org, .biz, .info all rank equally as well... but they are not all equal in the eyes of users. .org is typically perceived by users as great non-profit or information only sites. .net, .biz, .info are all considered as somewhat second class domains... and somehow less "legitimate" than their .com and .org counterparts. So .com and .org will typically get better click-thru-rates in the SERPs and tend to attract more "natural" links since they are perceived by users as being more "legitimate" or "authoritative".

Content does matter, not TLDs. No matter how many hundreds of .com or .org domains you have if you can't deliver sticky as velcro and linkable content, you're simply congesting the web with useless crap.

I don't understand why people are so obsessed with domain extensions instead of creating useful content that a large audience could benefit.

And to say that .info domains are cheap, I got a .info domain that has PR4 in less than a year. Cheap are the guys that can't perform in the SERPS and they blame it on the extension and not themselves. :D

As others have quite rightly pointed out, gTLD's are all treated equal. None will rank higher than another by default. Its what you do to them that determines how they rank.

.US is the ccTLD for the US. So its the best choice if you want to specifically target the US.

    Good choice :D

Yes they do rank as well as each other, but as for not being equal in the eyes of users... I tend to disagree.
Apart from type ins and word of mouth, I doubt many users would even notice the extension.

I think that has to do with FUD that gets spread by domainers, which is now confusing webmasters and has no basis afaik.

Would love to see the statistics that back up that theory.

    Cheers
    James

For USA all TLD are almost same because it's very difficult to determine which sites are for USA. Most of the websites are hosted in USA.

.us may help a bit. But .org .info .biz .com should work equally.
