What's so good about submitting to directories?

I always hear people talking about submitting to directories to increase backlinks. Well, what's so good about it?

I mean, most directories require a reciprocal link AND payment, right? Is it really that beneficial and worthy to submit to a directory?

 

They provide one way links. Don't waste your time with recip directories.

 

I use directories to promote clickbank products. It's great for organic traffic. I made $250 this week submitting articles to article directories with very little effort.

 

Yes, but you have to pay to submit, right? I've never seen a free directory, only paid ones.

There are literally a million free directories. Most aren't worth your time though. If you look around this board and elsewhere you'll find a number of choices for either special offers to submit your site, or a list of a few hundred good directories to handle by hand by yourself.

A directory is a well organized structure of website links. If people still use them to get resources so they are useful for SEO purposes they are really worthless.

Overture, formerly called GoTo, is a "pay for placement" search engine in which top placement in search results is given to the highest bidder. It is being included in the Directory Submission area because top bidders on Overture get high visibility placement (usually in the form of Sponsored Links) on the top of Yahoo and other directories partnered with Overture.

There are two ways to get listed with Overture. First, to get the best results, you can bid on a set of keywords, and pay based on the number of people that find your Web site by searching for those keywords. For example, a top bid for a given keyword might be $0.25. If 10 people find your site by searching in Overture for that keyword, you would pay $2.50. Some of the larger directories, although paid, do have a positive impact on rankings. The first thing I do with a new site is get some big directory links in there and that alone is enough to start pushing the site. It might cost me a few hundred dollars but its worth it. Plus, if it costs that much, they are all free from spam.
