whats pinging and how it works?

can anyone please explain in detail about the "ping" thing. my wp theme is already set to ping automatically, so i never really learned or understood the idea.

what dose pinging do? dose it show some sites your new article or whatever? if yes, how do you find sites to ping to? i mean are there any ping services website or any site you chose you can ping to? and when pinged to a site dose it mean it will have a link back to your article from that site?



another thing is like using soft wares for pinging. like you want to ping an article of your on ezine top inflate the number of times its seen, what sites do you choose to do that?

Pinging tells the search engine(s) that you've just updated your blog. And since search engines (and people) like to read new and fresh content they are more likely to take a wander over to your site to see what's new. This can mean not only more traffic and visitors to your blog, but also you'll get listed in the search engines faster

 

Go to such sites such as Pingler and Pingomatic to ping other sites.

thanks for the help. i know that it tells the search engine about new updates but i mean ...i guess i dont knwo how to put it into a question. my problem is more about the using software for doing that.. ok dont worry about it

Go to Settings in your Admin section of WP
Then go to writing section under settings
New page opens , Scroll down till last of the page

You will see the ping setting there, You can add / edit there
By default its : http://rpc.pingomatic.com/

 

it is better you dont use the automatic ping inside wp writing section, it will become a trouble when you post many articles in short time, i prefer use pingler a manual pinging tool for this purpose

 

oh i never new it hurt to use the automatic ping, would you tell me more about the the manual pinging tool you use? thank you.

The WP automatic ping application pings EVERY change on your blog. This may be seen as "ping spam" and cause your blog blocked by the ping services.
