The emergence of HTML5 represents a new era of web development, but what new content has html4 added?

Semantic elements. That's the most important thing.

HTML5 is the W3C's version of giving up!
HTML has been a flawed and broken language ever since the days of the browser wars and the W3C didn't make things any better. They were attempting to create a standard based on something they didn't even understand to begin with. Which is why they're constantly adding and depreciating tags and attributes. And explaining things using a bunch of BS, like "semantics" (meaning) and implementing crap like "roles". Which is also why it took sooooo many years for them to realize that ordered lists could go in reverse. CSS figured it out before they did. And so many other things to numerous to mention in this post.
A new era of garbage is more like it.
