Whats is the cheap way of getting traffic other than adwords?

Guys I can't afford adwords coz bid of the keywords is quite high and I am depending upon adsense for revenue. So advertising in adwords wont make any sense. Is there any other cheap way for getting traffic for my site?

Others here will have better answers for you but, for myself since I haven't worked a real job in a couple of years, I post on alot of forums that are related to my site and have a link to my site in my signature file... No I do not SPAM them (That's one thing all sites frown upon and will Ban You immediately if you continue to do it). And Word does get around if your a know Forum Spammer. if I have something to contribute I post a reply or start a Post on these sites...

I also signed up with as many Online Directories that had catagories that my site fits in as I could and I signed up with all the BLOG Related sites I could find since my site is bascially a Blog..

I also have a link to my site in my Email Sig and I signed up with alot of Yahoo & Msn Groups that are related to my site and reply to emails and sometimes start subjects that I think the groups would be interested in...

I also signed up with a few Affiliate Programs, Adsense, Yahoos Publisher Network, Cliksor & Chitika, eMiniMalls...

One last thing I did was find a couple of Free Banner Exchange sites and signed up with them, tho I get very little traffic compared to everyone here I do get a few visitors from that...

Basically for me it's alot of *Daily Legwork* but since it's *Only my Time* and not any cash coming from my pocket it works fine for me...

Have I made any Money from all this ????....

    NO..

I only made a small amount from Adsense so far in a year & a half.. But I just only started putting a real effort into it in the last 6 months or so...

My site was started for fun to share my Video Gaming Cartoons I created, then I kinda went nutz with adding Banners, Links and all kinds of stuff that I am into...

Once I sit down and strip the site of all the needless stuff we will see what happens...

    Cheers,

    Keith

the easiest way still ist to create good content that is needed by many and to publish it with top SEO to get into top 10 SERPS with as many different pages to attract some of the millions each day who are searching G and Y each day
good content also will make other site owners who found you make links TO you in their site without recip link
good content will also have others link TO you in many more forums that you could possibly post ...
and after a while you end up with many thousand visitors each day

The cheapest way of getting visitors to your site is getting high positions on search engines. Depending on the keyword that you target it can be easy or hard.

Depending on your site topic you can also find some websites that can bring you a lot of traffic. For example if you have a photoshop tutorial site, submit your tutorial to good-tutorials.com. If your site is about scripts, submit it to hotscripts.com If it is about news then digg.com

    What is your website about?

I just got this idea off Darren's ProBlogger site, and it is really working for me...

    Technorati tags.

If you are unfamiliar, go to technorati and read up on tagging. I put up a new site recently and have used a combo of Adwords and (free) Technorati tagging, and tagging is way out-performing Adwords for me. As of last week, Technorati is now my biggest referrer.

Well, specifics won't really be of any use to you unless your site is also about Low-Carb recipes.;)

forum sigs, blog comments. Those are the fastest anyway. Technorati tags work pretty good too.

    re blog comments

i have removed the comment feature in my blog
i had spammers dumping virutally dozens or hundreds of links into the comments
far more spam back links than acceptable

    on the other side
those blogs requiring first login simply use too much time to do so
hence i never comment myself as well for that reason

I was surprised as well, but after reading that on ProBlogger, I went and looked and all the tags I would be using were already well established. Not only that but users are actively surfing those tags. Yay!:D

The fastest and cheapest way is to do something crazy, controversial, or unique and get mass media coverage for it. That will have huge trickle-down effect for SERPS later as well.

For me, it is all about search engine rankings. I have taken a couple stabs at adwords, but I wasnt all that impressed. Then again, I didnt invest more than $10 per day on it.

Getting links on other sites is a good way, and I dont mean in their links page. right now, I am getting 15-20 unique hits per day off of a specific page on another person's site. At the same time, that site is probably getting the same from me, but I am ok with that. We both have a feature on our site that is popular with the people we target and we each link from that page as a "recommended site". That is also a way to get a link from a page with good PR.

Another good way for me was a small ad on a local radio show's website. I have a small 120x120 image on their site, it doesn't cost much, and the traffic I get from it is perfect. Not a ton of hits, but everyone is coming to my site with a genuine interest in my site.

My main thing though is still search engine rankings. I started targetting keyword phrases that were quality, but not heavily chased by the competition. From there, I slowly moved to higher quality keywords.

It may sound crazy, but this year, I fully intend on checking out the possibility of a couple billboards. That's right - put my site on the side of the highway.

Here is an obvious one - My website is "always" open where I work. co-workers and customers will see it on a daily basis. If I am away from my computer for any reason, lunch, business, whatever, I leave the computer on my website. Every little thing helps.

If I know the answer to that I wouldnt tell lol

Anyway since your aite is adsense based revenue you re in a difficult situation.

I would tryto get SE traffic and then link o relevent pages.

Linking is hard to do. Most people WONT want to link with you.

    Best of luck here

    NO magical answer

I guarantee that signing up with LinkMarket will get you links. If you limit yourself (and this takes discipline at first) to only exchanging with sites that relate to your own, it may help in the SERPS. If you just cave in and link to everyone, it will probably hurt you in at least Google, if not the other SEs.

I don't do this anymore, but at one point in my site's growth it did help boost me a good bit.

Caveat: the Algo (secret sauce) may have changed since then, so YMMV.

You can do link exchange, banner exchange , manual surf or auto surf. Also work on getting your website on the first few page of search engines.

I recommend against autosurf/pay-to-surf. That is garbage traffic. Banner exchange is a step up from that, though.

If you are going to pay for hits (with money OR time) you really want them to be qualified and targeted. Not all traffic is created equal!
