What's in a name? Domain Name Values, PR, what?

Proving once again that PR generally does not factor into the mix when it comes to domain values...

Hell, even back links, indexed pages, and serps don't mean diddly sometimes when it comes to the overall value of a domain name.

Case in point. GasPrices.Com sold recently for $225,000.00. It has no PR, 1 backlink, 3 indexed pages, and ranks pretty much, well, no where!

Yes, but if it did have PR, backlinks, and indexed pages, it would have sold for a lot more.

Doubtful. It sold for what someone was willing to acquire it for because if nothing else, they wanted the name. I don't think anything other than the name, and the fact that gas prices are high were responsible for the selling price.

Domain name itself has original value. The better name, the more value. This value if from the name.

PR, back links, high rank in search results are extra values. This extra value is from the SEO work. It can be understood as website's value.

If you can increase the extra value much by SEO, the original value of the name can be increased much!

its possible that its worth more if it was an estiblished, that value might have been knock down due the fact that its a niche site.

On the side note, these gas son of bitches making too much money, we need to take them down!!!

Even if you add in PR, SERPs, etc.. I doubt it would have commanded as high a price, or even added a significant bump in the overall price vs. what it sold for based on name alone.

Maybe if it had a fully developed site and established user base it might have commanded more money but even so, I think paying $225K for only a domain name is evidence that people with deep pockets still don't comprehend the nature of the internet.

If you look at this article about the sale, some fool bought Susan.com for $50K !!! I could see paying $120K for Ow.com as two letter domains are very rare but...

Makes me wonder how much I could get for my domain TheSynth.com that's PR4 ..and to think I sold DogFood.com for $5K back in 1996 and the site has still never been developed :)

Absolutely. That's why it's really stupid that people buy names on DP for PR when the names are absolute crap, that's insane! Quality of a name is what really matters, not PR.

No, those people aren't really stupid, they are smart. You buy a PR3 or more, put up some site, sell text links, and quickly make your money back.

I bought HearNew.com (PR3) for $10, sold $100 in text links in 2 months, sold the site for $100, decent 2 month profit for very little work.

I've sold sites from $150 to over $15k... The ones that sold for the highest had traffic and revenue... The lower levels sold on purely name alone..

It would be nice to get a decent amount out of the name itself!
