Just tried again, favicon doesn't show in IE, but it shows in Opera.

Now it is coming back to me. Disgust is right. If I remember correctly, when you clear your cache, you will also lose that icon too -- until you revisit the site. They are not persistant.

In IE; if you continuously wiggle the favicon and click refresh at the same time it will show up.

That sounds like an awful lot of work just to see some icon...

Get Mozilla Firefox! I used to groan at people who used non-IE browsers but this one really is worth the effort of downloading and installing. If nothing else, favicon works - everytime!

Back to Googlebot and odd page requests

I've just got Botspotter up and running again, after a rewrite and major architecture change. Googlebot hasn't revisited - but Slurp has been making some really odd requests for pages that don't exists, haven't existed...

Where googlebot was making some intelligent regional requests for pages that made sense to me I just don't get

    /pinstpatrick.htm
    /eagenda/wsn8_1display/classilace.htm
    /Programmation/wsn57_1display.htm
    /g4strahler/wsn4_3display/PPLLINKS.htm

the wsn bits are all legit, it's the text before and after that makes me wonder about the white stuff :)

I think you will find they are looking for sites that are cloaking.

Send a request for a random generated page name, get a reply a few times when you should get a 404 and alarm bells start ringing.

    Sarahk,
Funny you should bring that up. Until the last 24 hours I hadn't seen much of this since I first posted. When I woke up this morning my mailbox was full of 404 emails for weird pages like those you listed.

    Hi ResaleBroker,

if TheWormMan is right then we can sleep easy because I know I'm throwing 404s to them. I've just caught msnbot at it too so maybe it's the "strategy of the month" :)

    Agreed.
At least the 404 emails go straight to my deleted items box.:)

Thanks wormman - I don't go there often these days. Seems like the consensus is on cloaking detection.
