Copy Paste from letter sent to MSN : First I wanna ask where is the user forum of Desktop Search, because I wanna discuss things that are not in the help or FAQs. If there is no user forum I wanna say this : All I want is a search program who can build a simple list with all my files names (and only that). After that is far easy to do a search for a simple file, because all my files are allready stored in a simple text-like document index. Unfortunatelly MSN Desktop Search has far more options than I need (and no posibillity to disable them). Because MSN Desktop Search indexes tons of information from my files, soon the folder where stores indexed information grows to over 1.5 GB !. And that is very much, and uneeded, especially when all I want is a simple file names list. I'm sure that a file with all my files names, cannot exceed 10 MB !. Also I change my files, maybe once a week, so because MSN Search has a maximum 1 Day Snooze time, I have to shut down the program. And also when software is ON, there is constantly running 3 applications wich consumes over 40 MB Ram. So obviously the MSN Desktop Search is no good for simple needs. Anyone know a simple applications for that ? Edit : I just found out that when MSN indexes my files, it tries to play all my movie files (probably for extracting a thumbnail ?) and if there is some conflict with some codecs, it crashes. But I have to mention again : I DON'T NEED THUMBNAILS and other bells and whitles. God ! I'm mad. Why they didn't put some option to disable all that fancy options ?
Try pressing F3... Also, do you really expect MSN to take you seriously with that kind of spelling and grammar? Actually, you probably represent the median of their users, so maybe they will... Sorry, it's monday and i'm really in a bad mood.
"Try pressing F3..." Isn't that nice...? You are so kind... About my grammar, I actually learned english by myself. It's not my native language and I didn't learn it at school. And I was also in a hurry. About the MSN Desktop Search. Obviously it's no good for users who just wanna do a simple search for their files. The default tool from Windows, is not eficient. Instead, the ideea of taking the file's names from all the files on your hardisk and put it in a simple text file (including the locations), is great because a text file uses very little space and is very fast to search for the entries in it. So naturally I was glad that finally some company took this simple ideea and turned into an application. But, imagine my surprise when I found out that little index/text file with all the file names, is actually a mix of folders and files with 1.5 GB (and increasing) and on top of that, that little application is using more than 50 MB Ram...and inexplicably, can't index all the files. I, as a user, look into a folder and I clearly see the file "xxYYzz.xyz" .but this application for some strange reason, cannot. Actually, I just received a response from MSN. But either they didn't understand my e-mail either they have a robot answering the mails. They said something like : If you do not want the MSN Search Toolbar to index all your files, make sure you are doing the indexing properly. Please try indexing a specific folder on a specific location first. And after that they gave me specific directions from help manual how to do that.
Windows search will work well if you simply want to search for all or part of a filename, or the contents of a text / MS Office file As I said, I was in a bad mood. Sorry about that Well I don't think that either MSN Desktop search or Google Desktop Search use simple text files, but if you don't like MSN's offering you could try Google Desktop Search instead. - Jamie
All I ask is a very simple feature but paradoxically Google or MSN can only do complex/complicate things. I read on some forums that Google index files can the same, reach even 2 or 3 GB. After some extensive research I found out that maybe Copernic Desktop Search is the only app with enough options to satisfy all requirements : - Only app that can be customize to search every file (not just some - like MSN or Google) - Only app that can be set to search only in file names (a little complicate to set that) - it uses much smaller amount of memory (from the description) - indexing can be paused for more than one day. - and by removing all other file types (hopefully) it does just what I want: simple file names search (like the native windows) but with the added benefit of indexing (much more speed).
This is crazy. I really don't know what a hell is going on with all the Desktop Search software. I installed Copernic, I removed all the file types and I instruct the program to index absolutely all the file's types. Just the names. But it seems that these software just don't wanna do simple stuff. They don't wanna play like that. The index folder still uses a couple of hundreds MB, the software still indexes inside some files, and on top of that, now for example index any types of file, except *.avi movies and perhaps other common types. So now, the program doesn't find movie files. It seems for now if you wanna do a simple search, you are stuck with the slow windows search tool.
