I would recommend taking your website and using http://www.websitegrader.com on it. They explain a lot of these basic terms for you in great detail. If you don't know anything about programming at all you might find it difficult to understand. You should have basic knowledge of HTML at least.

For want of a better example, you could look at the source code for our site website design bury st edmunds - use View and Source menu options.

Within the Head section you have your meta tags - the ones below are all set up in the master page and this then copies across into each page:
Also in the Head section are meta tags which should be different for each page (ignore the script lines - they call up a submenu program):
Note that, with the next redesign, I will move the meta keywords tag into the section that is editable on each page so that I can more accurately target each page with keywords.

Then, within the content section, you also have very important tags called h tags. These are <h1> tag = use once per page for the most important heading and put keywords into it; <h2> tag ... <h6> tag - use for sub headings and again put keywords into them:
You also have ALT tags which - in theory - should be used to tell those with impaired vision what your image is all about but which in practice can also be used to weave in a few (not too many) keywords:
Hope all this helps - remember the most important tags for SEO are the TITLE tag in the head section and the <h1> ... <h6> tags in the content section.
